Kamsons Pharmacy is an award-winning, family-run pharmacy group with over 80 locations across England. Recent enhancements to Original Pack Dispensing (OPD) functionality in ProScript Connect® have enabled their pharmacy teams to streamline dispensing workflows, increase full-pack dispensing and improve financial accuracy. These improvements enable teams to work more efficiently while delivering a consistent, high-quality service for patients.

David Howells, Deputy Chief Operations Officer at Kamsons Pharmacy, shared his experience of implementing OPD across the organisation.

Supporting improved dispensing workflows at scale

OPD functionality was introduced to ProScript Connect customers across the UK to support legislation allowing pharmacists in England to supply up to 10% more or less than the prescribed quantity for eligible prescriptions, using their professional judgement.

Since its introduction, enhancements including automated prompts and clearer OPD indicators have improved usability and increased uptake across pharmacy teams.

For Kamsons Pharmacy, implementing OPD across its estate has helped streamline dispensing processes — particularly in environments where consistency and efficiency are critical.

We have a dispensing hub that only accepts full-pack prescriptions. OPD means we can send full packs more easily, rather than dropping scripts because of quantity mismatches.”

David Howells

Deputy Chief Operations Officer at Kamsons Pharmacy

By enabling more prescriptions to be dispensed as full packs, OPD helps reduce interruptions in dispensing workflows and allows more items to move through the system without needing to be reworked or removed.

Enhancing consistency across a large estate

For a group operating over 80 pharmacies, consistency in processes is key. OPD has helped standardise decision-making across the organisation by embedding prompts directly into the dispensing workflow.

The prompts help create consistency. Whether it’s a pharmacy in the north or south, they’re all being guided to make the same decisions.”

David Howells

Deputy Chief Operations Officer at Kamsons Pharmacy

By reducing variation in how OPD is applied, this helps create a more consistent and reliable dispensing process, supporting greater uptake across teams.

Delivering financial accuracy at scale

One of the most significant benefits for the organisation has been improved accuracy in reimbursement.

The biggest thing for me is knowing we’re being paid correctly for what we supply. Without that, there’s a risk of effectively giving stock away, and while that might seem small at first, across a large estate it adds up very quickly.”

David Howells

Deputy Chief Operations Officer at Kamsons Pharmacy

By ensuring endorsements are applied correctly as part of the dispensing process, OPD helped Kamsons Pharmacy reduce missed revenue — an important consideration when scaled across a large estate.

Even small discrepancies can add up quickly across multiple sites and high prescription volumes. By embedding accurate processes into the workflow, OPD provides greater confidence in financial outcomes.

Improving staff experience and usability

Enhancements such as automated prompts have made OPD easier to use, reducing reliance on manual decision-making and helping ensure opportunities are not missed. As David Howells explains, this has had a clear impact on day-to-day operations, with teams responding positively to the changes: “Overall, people are really happy with it — it’s made their jobs easier.”

By guiding users through the workflow and surfacing opportunities in real time, OPD not only simplifies the dispensing process but also supports a more consistent, efficient way of working across the organisation.
