As May sunshine finally settles in, we hope you’ve had a chance to enjoy the warmer weather - whether that’s a lunchtime walk, a coffee break outdoors, or just a bit more daylight to recharge.

This month’s newsletter brings updates, insights, and a spotlight on how we’re continuing to support healthcare teams across the UK. Discover how we’re helping to streamline summer services, how Newcastle Boots have halved their Pharmacy First consultation times and what pharmacies in Wales need to know as they begin their EPS journey, and more.

Digital Health Unplugged podcast: Shaun O’Hanlon discusses Optum's acquisition of EMIS

Earlier this month, our Chief Medical and Strategy Officer, Dr Shaun O’Hanlon joined Digital Health's Unplugged podcast to share Optum’s vision for the UK. In the interview, Shaun discusses the move beyond the EMIS brand, sets out Optum’s strategy for the UK, why we’ve left the EMIS brand behind and explains how coming together as a single organisation positions us to make a greater impact on healthcare across the UK.

Supporting summer consultations: Sunshine and Skin Cancer

As we move into the summer months, clinicians are likely to see an increase in consultations related to sun exposure and skin changes. The FourteenFish® Clinical Library provides educational resources to healthcare professionals, to promote efficient and focused learning. Our library currently hosts over 50 modules dedicated to streamlining the process of completing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and maintaining your clinical knowledge, with a range of topics relevant to both seasonality and real-world events. This month we focus on the summer module: Sunshine and Skin Cancer, designed to support your decision-making in General Practice.

The module includes:

  • Common presentations linked to sun exposure
  • Guidance on assessing suspicious skin lesions
  • When to reassure, when to refer
  • Prevention advice and patient education tips

This update is especially relevant for managing seasonal concerns and helping patients understand the risks associated with prolonged sun exposure.

Find out more about our Clinical Library here.

Are you a pharmacy in Wales starting your Electronic Prescription (EPS) journey?

In South Wales, Gareth Rowe and his team at Ogmore Vale and Nant-y-moel pharmacies are already seeing the benefits of EPS. From saving time on prescription collection to improving tracking and workflow, Gareth shares his experience on how EPS has transformed his daily pharmacy operations.

If you’re getting ready to roll out EPS in your pharmacy, hear what Gareth has to say about what worked, what surprised him, and what advice he’d give to others just starting out.

Newcastle Boots halves Pharmacy First consultation times with Digital Gateway

At Boots Pharmacy in Newcastle city centre, Pharmacy First consultations are now twice as fast, thanks to the Digital Gateway feature in PharmOutcomes®.

When Pharmacy First launched last year, demand at Boots Newcastle surged. With more walk-ins and limited time, Linda Hameed and her team faced the challenge of delivering quick, high-quality care to a growing number of patients.

That’s when Digital Gateway was introduced and started making a real difference.

By scanning a QR code, patients now complete a short form before their consultation with a pharmacist, speeding up checks and streamlining triage.

Digital Gateway has basically cut the consultation time by half. It’s helped with queues, waiting times, and consultation times—we absolutely love it.

Rochdale Health Alliance use the power of data to transform their services

Rochdale Health Alliance (RHA) has been using EMIS Web® to drive meaningful change across its 36 practices. With over 250,000 patients in the area, the goal is clear - make sure everyone receives the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Using EMIS Web PCN Hub, RHA has been able to reimagine their triage system with improved signposting, ensuring that patients are directed to the most appropriate service, whether that's a GP, pharmacist, nurse, or social prescriber.
