Primary care's vital role in transforming clinical research

EMIS Web enables practices to work collaboratively, to focus on patients, and improve patient outcomes. With 46 percent of practices in Wales using EMIS Web, and over 1.5 million patients being served by the technology, it’s easy to see how EMIS Web is becoming the system of choice for busy practices.

Streamlined functionality to enhance user satisfaction

When asked about the functionality within EMIS Web Leanne Owen, Deputy Practice Manager at Canolfan Iechyd Llangollen Health Centre, Wales, immediately opens with, “I like the simplicity of the EMIS Web layout. The searches are easy to manipulate, the usability is great, and the template builder is really good.”

It’s not just Leanne who’s a fan of EMIS Web, it’s a collective enthusiasm practice wide, “I’m the trainer of EMIS Web at our practice and some of us are more tech savvy than others, but as the design and functionality is focused on the user first, the software caters for different abilities and job roles, from those who work on reception, to GPs.

“I’m always on the lookout for ways in which my colleagues use it to get more tips and tricks and they come to me for the same. It’s helpful to share expertise, and I find EMIS Now a great resource if we don't have the answers in our cluster.”

EMIS is clinically led and EMIS Web is no exception. As a result, EMIS’ focus is on user experience, including day-to-day functionality, saving clinical time, ease of use, and providing secure and clinically safe software, whilst giving primary care the peace of mind that EMIS Web is underpinned by the necessary NHS regulations and requirements.

Flexible tech, supporting faster treatment decisions

“For me, the F12 function for the protocol launcher is a game changer. I can automate actions making it quick and consistent and reducing human error. For example, we have much less time in a flu clinic than a regular consultation so to have auto populated fields via F12 (which includes the batch number), it’s not only time saving but it helps the practice get paid accurately when claiming.

“My motto is to always do smarter, not harder working. EMIS Web supports that mentality.”

Prepared for the unexpected

When used in a cluster setting, EMIS Web has the capabilities to share appointment books and patient records in real time. This is not just confined to practices but can include local services.

The cluster Leanne works within was established in 2017 and it was during Covid that practices within the health board, but outside of the South Wrexham Cluster, began piggybacking onto the agreement to meet the demands in primary care, “We immediately saw payback of sharing resources across the network, EMIS Web responded flexibly, enabling us to make quick decisions which was vital at that uncertain time. This included setting up a Covid hub centre so all EMIS practices in Wrexham who signed up to the agreement could book patients using cross-organisational appointments. The GP session holder of the appointment could access the patients' medical records, have updated records and then add their consultation onto the system so the patients’ practice had the information on the care history instantly.”

“This system is forward thinking in its design and is the reason I have never looked elsewhere.”
