Primary care's vital role in transforming clinical research

As spring rolls around, we bring you a roundup of updates from across EMIS: looking at clinical research delivery within primary care, the latest information on the upcoming launch of ScriptCheck for community pharmacies, and the new dates added to our EMIS Roadshows schedule. You can also discover more about Care Navigator, our new total triage solution.

Clinical research delivery in primary care

Read the latest report

Capturing the longitudinal medical history of 98% of the UK population, the richness and continuity of primary care records could transform clinical trial recruitment and accelerate the delivery of new treatments. And yet, despite up to 90% of all NHS health contacts occurring in primary care, it only delivers around 10% of all clinical trial activity. So what's standing in our way?

The latest report from Newmarket Strategy explores the barriers we must overcome to make clinical trial delivery a normal part of the daily work in GP practices, enabling patients across the nation to benefit from the latest research and treatments.

In her foreword, Professor Dame Helen Stokes-Lampard, Professor of GP Education at Birmingham Medical School comments, "we have a remarkable resource at our disposal for research; using this data to tackle the growing challenges faced by the NHS is imperative”.

Primary care's vital role in transforming clinical research

In her latest blog Chief Medical Officer for Data and Research, Dr Lucy Mackillop, reflects on the findings from the Newmarket Strategy report ‘Harnessing primary care data for clinical research and trial recruitment’. She further explores the opportunity for primary care to invigorate the clinical research landscape in the UK, and the impact this could have on enabling more treatments to reach those who could benefit, faster.

Supporting total triage with Care Navigator

With patient demand at an all-time high in primary care, it can be difficult to balance workload with available capacity. The traditional model for primary care funnels patients towards GP appointments, providing little opportunity for triage, meaning that patients who don’t require a GP appointment aren’t always redirected. This can put additional strain on practices and take up valuable time that could be better spent with patients more in need.

Care Navigator is our new total triage solution, providing configurable online consultations, cross- organisation appointment booking and flexible patient messaging.

  • Capture patient requests in customisable forms to effectively triage people to the right care first time.
  • Communicate 1-2-1 or with targeted cohorts using comprehensive patient engagement options.
  • Invite patients to book appointment through self-book links and book patients into services at other organisations.
  • Create and share questionnaires to help monitor patients and maximise QOF points.

Integrated with EMIS-X and EMIS Web, Care Navigator supports modern general practice access, allowing patients to access the care they need and enabling practices to take control of capacity and demand.
