Employee spotlight: working as an expert software developer

As part of national coding week 2023, we caught up with Subashini Pandurangan, expert software development engineer, to find out more about life as a developer.

Briefly describe your job role
I work as an expert developer at EMIS [now Optum], primarily focusing on team delivery and managing data extraction for the NHS. My role involves designing and optimizing SQL queries, extracting and transforming data, ensuring data integrity. Also, oversee day-to-day operations, monitoring team performance and report on metrics.

Take us through a day in the life of an expert software development engineer
A typical day starts with reviewing project priorities, monitoring the data extraction, addressing live issues and handling customer queries/requirements. I spend a significant amount of time for code review and writing SQL queries for the NHS. I collaborate with the team on the development process and meeting data needs. Debugging, performance tuning, and testing are also essential aspects of my daily routine.

What do you enjoy most about coding?
What I enjoy most is the problem solving aspect of coding. Every day brings new challenges, and finding elegant solutions to complex data extraction and manipulation tasks is incredibly satisfying. I also appreciate the collaborative nature of our team and the opportunity to continuously learn and grow.

What do you think are the benefits of AI and what the implications might be?
In the healthcare sector, AI holds the potential to bring about significant transformation. Its advantages encompass the automation of repetitive tasks, enhanced decision-making through comprehensive data analysis, and an overall improvement in the quality of healthcare services.

What’s been your favourite project to work on and why?
My favourite project was developing a real-time data reporting system that provided critical insights to healthcare professionals. It was satisfying because it directly contributed to improving patient care and outcomes, which is a core mission of EMIS [now Optum].

Do you have any advice for people who want to get into coding?
I would recommend beginning by establishing a solid foundation in programming fundamentals. Consistent practice, personal project involvement, and collaboration with peers to gain insights from their experiences are all highly beneficial. Additionally, maintaining a sense of curiosity is key, given the ever-evolving nature of technology.
