Freeing up extra appointments in North Staffordshire GP Federation

As the largest GP federation in England, One Care provide support and training to over 70 member practices across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG), who in turn provide healthcare for around 1 million patients. We spoke to Digital Consultant, Stephanie Hatton about how her team is using Optum Learn  to develop a deeper understanding of our products, allowing them to better support practice teams.

One Care’s Digital Support team helps to ease pressure from busy frontline staff by providing expertise and practical support. With all member practices using EMIS Web®, it is essential for the team to have a good understanding of the system in order to provide one-on-one training, as well as create and share referral forms, protocols, templates and searches, which can be rolled out across the federation. With Optum (formerly EMIS) technology at the heart of their role, the Digital Support team jumped at the opportunity to make Optum Learn their platform of choice to ensure continuous learning and development.

Embedding knowledge through interactive learning

Joining One Care in 2021, Stephanie set about upskilling herself on knowledge gaps using Optum Learn as her primary tool. She knew a little about searches and protocols but wanted to develop her understanding and skills to better support her colleagues. She quickly found that the interactive learning style of the platform helped bring the content to life and made the learning experience much more engaging and enjoyable.

For me and my style, it works really well. I love having my certificates and my badges to see what I’ve done, and the interactive element is the bonus side for me; I need to be able to do it myself.”

Stephanie Hatton

Digital Consultant, One Care

Optum Learn enhances the learning experience by providing clear, real-world examples and context to embed knowledge. With flexible approaches, our courses are designed to suit a variety of learning experiences, from short videos to click-through examples, assessments and feedback. For Stephanie, the homework element of our webinar series 'Getting to grips with clinical tools' worked particularly well in helping her to understand and embed the learning.

Supporting personal development

The certificates, badges and progress records that Stephanie is collecting along the way are also supporting her to evidence her development with her manager in monthly meetings. What’s more, with manager reporting features, there’s the ability to track learning across the team – allowing you to identify gaps and recommend courses and events.

In my 1-to-1 every month I get to share what I’ve learned and show my progress.”

Stephanie and her colleagues continue to prioritise dedicated learning time via Optum Learn in their diaries on a weekly basis, meaning they can carry on developing their skillset at their own pace and provide greater support to their colleagues. With new courses being added all the time, it’s a great way to bring learning to life and help your teams to thrive.
