With clinical system and patient administration system (PAS) integration, hospital clinicians at Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust and patients’ GPs in the locality can track hospital admission, diagnostic test data and discharge information in real time.

Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust provides care to more than 240,000 people. The trust uses Optum's (formerly EMIS) CaMIS PAS+ system, which provides a central view of patient information at any time, and at any location within the trust.

The modules that are integrated into the PAS include:

  • Inpatient management
  • Outpatient call and tracking
  • Clinical viewer
  • Clinical record tracking
  • Theatre scheduling
  • Digital dictation
  • Bed management
  • Electronic discharge
  • Electronic GP letters.

As soon as a patient arrives for their appointment, using the PAS system we can track the patient and know where they are at any point of their patient journey

The Patient Call Display screen also helps patients monitor their own appointments and look for instructions as to the location of their next appointment or consultation.

“At discharge, the consultant has a consolidated view of all the episodic information that has been entered into the clinical systems throughout the patient’s stay. The consultant can use Digital Dictation to immediately enter any discharge details into the patient record. Discharge letters are then sent out to GP’s within 24 hours.”

Enabling seamless working

Integrated clinical systems the PAS system is integrated with other clinical systems within the trust - such as Symphony, Optum’s Emergency Care solution - as well as interfacing with other third party systems. By integrating clinical systems with the PAS, Hinchingbrooke are delivering key objectives of their IT strategy, such as paperless working and integration of data between primary and secondary care.

Gordon Greaves comments: “By integrating our clinical IT systems, we have improved communication with GPs and enhanced information flow, which ultimately contributes towards patient safety by improving the quality and speed of patient data between hospitals and GP surgeries.”
