Consultation Write Back – over 40,000 consultations in 2024

Consultation Write Back allows practices across a PCN receive a copy of consultation notes when their patients are treated by another organisation in the network. The coded consultation is saved back to a patient’s GP record in seconds, enabling more joined up patient care across PCNs. Over 40,000 consultations have been successfully written back using this functionality in 2024 already.

You can find out more about Consultation Write Back on our website and the user guides available on EMIS Now. Contact your Account Director for more information on getting started.

Coming soon: Supporting the Primary Care Access Recovery Plan (PCARP) with Pharmacy First

Published in May 2023, PCARP aims to “tackle the 8am rush and make it easier and quicker for patients to get the help they need.” With that in mind, our teams have been working hard to ensure that our technology is assisting you and adhering to the NHS England requirements.

Pharmacy First

Pharmacy First is an expanded service and will replace the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS) which will come to an end on the 31st January 2024.

  • As part of the new Pharmacy First service, as outlined Primary Care Access Recovery Plan (PCARP) and the Delivery Plan for Recovering Access to Primary Care, we're working with NHS England to enable details of a community pharmacy consultation to be sent back to the patient’s record in EMIS Web.
  • Local Services will be updated from CPCS to reflect the seven common conditions under Pharmacy First so you can refer from your practice to community pharmacy.
  • The solution ‘GP Connect Update Record’, will update a patient's GP record with details of a consultation held at a community pharmacy with GP Connect Messaging being used to transfer the data in a structured format, informing the GP of the consultation details.
  • This structured data will be filed on the patient’s record as a provisional consultation and a workflow task created for the data to be reviewed and actioned. Any medication issued will be automatically filed.
  • We'll be notifying users when this new functionality is enabled, you can read more about it on EMIS Now in order to prepare.

Blog: Integrated care through enhanced interoperability

Real-time connectivity among health technologies is crucial for facilitating the provision of safer and timely patient care. At its core, interoperability serves as the element that links diverse healthcare settings within Integrated Care Systems (ICSs), unifying services irrespective of the technology or healthcare provider.

We engaged in a conversation with our Group Interoperability Director, Liam King, to delve into the significance of interoperability in shaping a patient-centric NHS and its pivotal role in delivering genuinely integrated care.

Product updates

Coming soon: Primary Care Registration Management (PCRM) - postcode lookup feature

We've developed a new postcode look up feature which is linked into Ordnance Survey APIs. This gives you the ability to search for a patient’s address based on postcode, saving time by eliminating the need to type in a full address.

This has been implemented within the registration module to improve data quality and ensures that address updates are consistently applied to Spine. Full rollout will be completed at the end of February.

Please note: by using the new postcode look up feature (receiving or accessing any Supplied Data from Ordnance Survey) you agree to be bound by this End User Licence, which is published at Ordnance Survey Places public sector end user licence - NHS Digital.

GP Connect Send Document

With GP Connect Send Document messaging in EMIS Web, a patient's registered GP practice can now receive a PDF consultation summary following care delivered at another healthcare organisation - supporting shared care and extended access.

All GP organisations in England have been enabled to receive these messages via their MESH mailbox and it's now extended to PCN hubs.

Increase in QOF search frequency

To support end-of-year activity we've increased the frequency of QOF reports:

  • How Am I Driving (HAID) report results is refreshed every weekday (Monday – Friday).
  • End of Year Lookahead report results are refreshed over the weekend and Wednesdays*.
  • 1-Month Lookahead refreshed over the weekend.
  • We've made a series of optimisations to improve the efficiency of QOF reports and reduce the execution times and have assigned additional technical resource to support end of year activity and ensure reporting runs smoothly for both end users and large national extracts.
  • We're aiming to further increase the frequency of the End of Year Lookahead report and will provide confirmation of this change in due course.

Please note: on Wednesdays the HAID results take priority and will be available first thing in the morning for all users, with End-of-Year Lookahead results availably by noon at the latest.

Make patient visits easier and more efficient with auto scheduling

Bromley Healthcare made the decision to move to Civica Scheduling to make the creation and allocation of patient visits much quicker and more environmentally friendly. The auto scheduling tool intelligently plots a clinicians visits by the area the patient lives, and routes their journey logically.

Civica Schedules are user friendly and can be tailor made to capture the interventions and record relevant information for each individual visit. The system enables you to ensure that the visit is allocated to the appropriately trained healthcare professional, and maps them to the post code regions they are aligned to.

With Civica Scheduling’s easy to use mobile app combined with EMIS mobile installed on the clinician’s smartphone, healthcare professionals have all the information they need available in their pockets at all times.

"Bromley Healthcare’s community nursing teams and all of adult therapy services are using Civica Scheduling and they are quoted to have said, they would never return to manual allocation again." Sue Verran, Bromley Healthcare

PatientPod improves access for patients

Increasingly, the Healthcare Monitors PatientPod system has been installed in surgeries and community spaces such as libraries, with and without patient record integration.

In a recent case, a patient needed to lose weight before an operation. However, with no means to weigh themselves accurately at home or attend the GP surgery regularly during working hours this was proving to be difficult. Their GP was able to direct them to their local library that had the PatientPod system which enabled them to monitor both their weight and blood pressure thereby allowing them to reach their target weight safely.

Improve the quality of electronic patient data with Solutions 4 Health

Solutions 4 Health are pleased to have developed EMIS Connect to link their Integrated Health System (IHS) to the NHS GP patient system, EMIS Web. This has allowed for the seamless transfer and synchronisation of key patient identifiers, such as NHS Numbers, as well as autonomously sending GP reports including QRISK3 and SNOMED codes back to GPs for attachment into the EMIS patient record system.

Previously, this transfer relied on the use of manual intervention to add attached documents to patient records, but now, EMIS Connect has saved time for GP administration teams by eliminating the need for lengthy data entry. EMIS Connect has improved the quality of patient data captured electronically and saves cost by preventing the duplication of NHS health checks.
