Our environmental responsibilities
Environmental sustainability, delivered through steady, measurable improvement is an integral part of our operations and value chain.
Committed to reducing our environmental impact
As a healthcare technology supplier, we understand that a healthy society depends on a healthy environment. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact, and this is delivered via four supporting objectives:
- Continual, long-term reduction in our directly and indirectly owned and controlled greenhouse gas emissions
- A sustainable supply chain that enables our sustainability strategy goals
- Everyone taking personal responsibility for mitigating their environmental impact
- Driving continuous improvement in the sustainability of our products and services
Striving for net zero
We have a dedicated strategy to achieve our target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 working additionally towards supporting the NHS’s net zero plan.
We’ve measured our carbon emissions across our entire carbon footprint and are working to develop a climate transition plan to achieve our objectives.
We’ve set a milestone to reach a 90% reduction in our overall emissions with minimal reliance on offsetting by 2040, a 90% reduction in our directly and indirectly controlled emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 2030 and already taken steps to reduce our carbon footprint across our value chain in support of our objectives.
Making an impact
We recognise that positive changes, big and small, add up. Work is underway, and we are:
-
Reducing electricity
We’ve switched to renewable electricity contracts and ceased using gas across a number of our sites, working with staff to reduce electricity usage in our office buildings.
-
Moving to the cloud
We’ve started the migration to cloud based servers.
-
Recycling
We’re replacing plastic with recycled and recyclable packaging in our warehouse.
-
Fully electric fleet
We are transitioning to a fully electric fleet and have installed vehicle charging points at some of our main office sites. We offer a salary sacrifice scheme for employees to lease electric cars.
-
Supply chain
We encourage our suppliers to value and demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, through our supplier code of conduct.
-
Supporting reforestation
We plant saplings for every new starter to the business, and offer employee salary sacrifice tree planting and personal contributions.
Driving positive change
A group of like-minded employees volunteer to form an employee-led community who champion ‘green’ matters. All employees have the chance to join and drive positive change.
Find out how you can tooSupporting the NHS's net zero plan
In support of our evolving plan to achieve net zero aligned with NHS commitments, our technology helps our NHS customers to reduce their carbon footprint, including through:
- Digital alternatives to original paper-based processes, such as the digital repeat prescription process.
- Integrated telephony and video providing a referral process between healthcare providers and digital consultations, which have reduced or eliminated patients’ need to travel.
- Many products and services being hosted in the cloud.
- All products and services being required to pass through a sustainability review.
- Using energy efficient code in products to reduce customer power consumption and teams trained in energy efficient design principles.
- Using analytics to identify and inform customers of opportunities to reduce environmental impact.
