Optum UK has successfully migrated all GP practices across Wales to EMIS Web®. This marks the completion of one of the largest digital transformation programmes ever undertaken in Welsh primary care.
Delivered by Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) in partnership with GP practices and suppliers across Wales, the programme has seen 193 GP practices transition from Vision to EMIS Web. This completes the move to a single clinical system across Welsh primary care. Since the programme began in June 2024, more than 1.75 million patient records have been safely migrated and over 5,000 practice staff supported through training, preparation and go-live activities.
The process of moving to EMIS Web was very slick. The communication was spot on, and the timeline was 100% accurate, which was important in managing patient expectations.”
The final practices to complete the migration were Riverside Medical Practice in Caerphilly and Newport Surgery in Pembrokeshire.
By day one we were already seeing patients, managing referrals and reviewing results confidently. That reflects the amount of preparation and support that went into the migration beforehand. It's been a smooth transition and a really positive experience for the practice."
Cleveland Henry, Chief Operating Officer, Optum UK, said, "This marks an important milestone for everyone involved in the delivery of one of the largest digital transformation programmes ever undertaken in Welsh primary care.
"We're very proud to have worked alongside Digital Health and Care Wales and GP practices across the country to deliver this significant programme. Completing the move to a single clinical system across Wales creates a strong platform for future innovation and improvements in primary care."
DHCW reports that EMIS Web is already delivering benefits for clinicians and patients, with improved access to digital tools that support more efficient, connected care.
As Wales moves forward with a fully standardised GP clinical system, DHCW is looking forwards to future service improvements, greater interoperability and the continued digital transformation of primary care. This change establishes the foundations for future innovation, helping ensure GP practices are well placed to meet the changing needs of patients across Wales.
