Primary care's vital role in transforming clinical research

As we approach the halfway point of 2023, we take a look at Lord O'Shaughnessy's recent recommendations for clinical trials in the UK and how our Recruit solution is supporting Grove Medical Centre to engage their patients in clinical trial recruitment. We also bring news for our customers in Wales on system procurement.

Reflecting on the Lord O'Shaughnessy review

Commissioned by UK government ministers, the recently published Lord O’Shaughnessy review proposed a number of recommendations on how to improve the environment for running commercial clinical trials in the UK.

In her recent blog Chief Medical Officer for Data and Research, Dr Lucy Mackillop, reflects on these recommendations, and the impact that primary care could have on transforming clinical trial representation.

Is your practice supporting clinical research?

The more healthcare continues to evolve, the more patient outcomes continue to improve. We’re making it simple for practices in England to support clinical research with our completely free Recruit tool in EMIS Web.

Recruit uses advanced analytics and algorithms powered by EMIS-X to enable practice teams to identify and contact potentially eligible patients for clinical trials. When a trial is recruiting in your area, we’ll get in touch to let you know. From there, you can simply access the Recruit platform from within EMIS Web, open the generated list of potentially eligible candidates, review as desired and initiate an SMS.

We’ve got more trials coming to the platform soon, so activate for free today to get involved. Search KB0076213 on EMIS Now, or click here.

Introducing Joy

We’ve partnered with Joy, a social prescribing platform that manages the workflow and case management associated with social prescribing referrals, helping you connect your patients to local services – seamlessly.

1 in 5 GP appointments take place with patients whose health and wellbeing challenges cannot be addressed with traditional clinical pathways. Joy helps your team easily identify and connect these patients to non-clinical services, like support groups, within the local community.

Healum improves health outcomes for Type 2 Diabetes

Recognising key challenges facing primary care; where the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is high, yet the self-management of the condition is poor. Healum identified the need for a scalable solution for multidisciplinary teams within primary care to support and manage their patients remotely.

In a recent randomised control trial, in collaboration with Vernova Healthcare, Healum evaluated the effectiveness of personalised care planning software in tandem with a patient-facing app, to motivate, monitor and support patients with diabetes.

Through integration with EMIS Web, patient information was seamlessly shared remotely between healthcare teams and the patient record, whilst also allowing for information, such as test results, to be distributed directly to the patient.

“People had regular prompts on a day-to-day basis in relation to things they had agreed to be doing… and what we’ve shown here is that the app is effective in terms of helping people to be able to make choices that are beneficial to them in terms of glucose level.”
