EMIS is proud to be working in partnership with NHSEI and MSD towards the goal of eliminating Hepatitis C.

The Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Elimination Programme is working towards a shared goal of eliminating hepatitis C as a major public health issue in England, ahead of the World Health Organisation (WHO) goal of 2030. To achieve this vision, NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) are working in collaboration with a number of partners, including 22 Operational Delivery Networks, the Hepatitis C Trust and the pharma industry. The Programme values the important role primary care can play in driving forward HCV elimination, and recognises GPs as well placed to identify patients and support them to receive treatment.

The Elimination Programme is pleased to mark the 10th anniversary of World Hepatitis Day on 28th July 2021. This year’s theme is “hepatitis can’t wait” which conveys the urgency of efforts needed to eliminate the virus, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also a timely reminder that hepatitis C is preventable, treatable and for most people, curable due to effective antiviral drugs. Furthermore, quick and free confidential testing and treatment is available to all patients.

EMIS has been working in partnership with NHSEI and MSD to deploy a ‘Patient Search Identification (PSI)’ tool developed by MSD. The PSI tool searches for coded hepatitis C virus risk factors in patient records in primary care settings to identify potentially at-risk patients that should be reviewed and, if appropriate, tested. EMIS along with other GP clinical system suppliers, is supporting MSD to make the PSI tool available to GP practices.

This protocol is available now in the EMIS Web Library Resources. EMIS Web - Hepatitis C Elimination project (emisnow.com)

With unlimited access to treatments, a widely shared partnership commitment and assertive patient-finding, eliminating hepatitis C earlier than the WHO 2030 target is within reach.
