Supporting the response to COVID-19

Since we last published our newsletter, the evolving coronavirus outbreak has dramatically changed our day-to-day lives. Like many businesses across the nation, we've moved a large proportion of our people to work from home, and we're committed to ensuring ongoing support for our customers throughout this crisis. Our CEO, Suzy Foster explains just some of the many ways we've been working to support the NHS over these past few weeks.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, so does our response to it. For the most up to date information and guidance please refer to our COVID-19 response page or visit EMIS Now for access to up to date product guides and resources to help you get the most out of your system. 

Our COVID-19 hub on Patient.info provides information to support patients, including content on how to self-isolate, articles on how to keep fit at home, and patient information leaflets regarding symptoms of the virus itself. 

We need your help

We've joined forces with the University of Oxford and the Royal College of General Practitioners to urgently recruit as many GP practices as possible for COVID-19 research. We're asking GP practices in England using EMIS Web to contribute patient data in order to develop a deeper understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Supporting remote working in primary care

We've collated all of the information you need to know about our remote working solutions to support the increasing need for agile working across practices - helping you understand your options and decide what best meets your needs. 

To ensure that you have the tools needed to safely and effectively treat patients at this time we've enabled Video Consult free of charge for all EMIS Web practices in England.

Online Consult solution free to all practices in Scotland

We're currently offering our Online Consult solution free of charge to all EMIS Health and Vision GP practices in Scotland for 12 weeks, as part of our drive to respond to increasing demand on GP practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Find out more here

Best practice prescribing during COVID-19

Digital prescribing technologies can have a huge impact in alleviating pressure for your practice, reducing admin workloads and practice footfall, and eliminating unnecessary appointments. To make this easier we've outlined the steps you need to take to enable this functionality and benefit from paperless prescribing solutions. 

Supporting hot and cold clinics with EMIS Web

EMIS Web for Clinical Services enables practices to work together in clinical hubs to triage and manage patients across hot and cold clinics. You can find out more here, or check out our animation below.  

Supporting community pharmacy

To help pharmacists tackle the COVID-19 outbreak, we are offering Pharmacy Access, My Local Pharmacy and Constant Connect for free for three months.

Free video appointment through Patient Access for professionals 

We're enabling free video consultations for pharmacies for three months, via Patient Access for Professionals, to support the delivery of services to patients.

Our Partners' response to COVID-19

This month we held the first in a series of partner webinars. In partnership with X-on we discussed how cloud-based telephony, like their product Surgery Connect, can enable efficiencies during these unprecedented times. Product updates

Primary Care

We've increased the capacity for our remote working solutions to support all GPs needing to work remotely. 


We've been granted full roll out approval from NHS Digtial for Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) to be used by primary care clinical services using EMIS Web. This enables healthcare practitioners to work together in hubs across their local areas, supporting flexible, extended access to healthcare services and reducing the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for both patients and practitioners. 

EPS phase four is now live in EMIS Web, enabling patients to collect their prescription from any pharmacy. 


Two NSS request for change (RFC) developments have delivered in EMIS PCS (Release A). RFC1015 - HPV Screening which introduces a new messaging format that interfaces with the Scottish Cervical Call Recall System (SCCRS) and RFC - 1027 Dispensing Status to enable more flexible serial prescribing for dispensing GPs.

We have also started rolling out RFC1034 - COVID-19 Shielding which adds a clinical code and alert to COVID-19 shielding category patients that have been centrally identified by NHS Scotland.

Community Pharmacy

We've implemented a COVID-19 support button on ProScript Connect, to direct users to useful functionality additional services and guidance. 

Hospital medicines management

We've added guides to EMIS Now to help customers configure our suite of Acute products to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 flags are now included in ePMA to highlight patients with, or at risk of developing complications from COVID-19.  

We've added a pharmacy danger level report to allow hospital pharmacies to highlight when stock levels of crucial medications are low.


Symphony now includes COVID-19 flags and has a report to highlight the locations of COVID-19 patients.
