Integrating clinical and administration systems

Guy’s & St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) integrate over 30 clinical and financial systems, delivered by EMIS Health Integration experts.

Selecting a scalable integration platform

Upon reviewing their existing integration platform, GSTT found that their existing platform was not robust enough, and the frequency of ‘down time’ was increasing. This meant that patient safety was being affected as computer systems used in treatments were often unavailable.

GSTT selected EMIS Health as their integration partner to deliver highly scalable, Microsoft based Integration Engine Platform, designed with healthcare I mind.  EMIS Health is recognised as a leading healthcare integration platform partner, being awarded the Healthcare Partner of the Year award by Microsoft in 2012.

Refining the goals

To ensure the project met the expectations of the trust, GSTT and EMIS Health worked together to define the project goals.

  • Simplify and automate interoperability to reduce costs and errors
  • Gain critical insights on business processes and performance
  • Shield processes from change impacts
  • Promote agility and manageability
  • Integrate systems to eliminate redundancy

Integrating clinical systems

The project required the integration of over 30 clinical and financial systems into one platform. GSTT now have a resilient and scalable platform that is easily monitored and supported on a 24 hour basis.

Impact of the project

The solution not only meets the current demands of the trust, but also it has the capacity to meet further requirements without impacting upon the system performance.

Overall the system has reduced the risk to clinical workflows, improved the performance where workflows cross multiple systems and it has improved interoperability across the whole system.

“We engaged with EMIS Health on our Integration Programme and have been very pleased with their professionalism, knowledge and commitment. Their ability to work closely with our IT teams and provide continued support has been invaluable.”
